Classic & Native Mythology

We will read and discuss classic Greek and Roman myths and the myths and legends of North American Native peoples. We will complete worksheets on each passage read and write original summaries and analyses of selected pieces. We will watch movies about mythology and write about them. There will be opportunities to earn extra credit by doing independent reading and research into classic and/or Native myths and legends.
Topics covered will include: Creation of the Titans and Gods, Prometheus, the twelve labors of Heracles, Circe and Odysseus, Aeneas’ trip to the underworld, the follies of Midas, Cupid and Psyche, Jason and the golden fleece, the theft of Persephone, Odysseus and the Cyclops, Achilles and Hector, the Trojan horse, Orpheus and Eurydice, Oedipus, Antigone, Perseus, the woman who fell from the sky, the Four Worlds, Scarface, Oochigeas and the invisible hunter, Saynday gets the Sun, Two Feathers and Turkey Boy, Coyote and the thundering rock, the One Who Sets Things Right, vision quest, Coyote and Death, and selections from the books AMERICAN INDIAN MYTHS AND LEGENDS and NORTH AMERICAN INDIAN LORE.

The student will actively engage in the reading process and read, understand, respond to, analyze, interpret, evaluate and appreciate a wide variety of texts.
