Real World Vocabulary

This class is fun with words. We will learn and work together with new words from real life and school subjects daily. We will also play word games together like Scrabble, Scattergories and Taboo.
Some of the categories of words we will work with include: road signs and maps, health and nutrition, finances, doctor visits and medicine, the workplace, shopping, jobs, hobbies and recreation, menus and recipes, forms, applications and contracts, communication and technology, and weather. We will also study words found in short excerpts from literature.

B. Vocabulary Expansion
The student will apply a variety of strategies to expand vocabulary.
BENCHMARKS:
1. Acquire, understand and use vocabulary by learning words through explicit vocabulary instruction and independent reading and appropriately use these words in writing.
2. Determine the meaning of unfamiliar words and metaphors by using dictionaries, context clues and reference books.
3. Identify and analyze analogies.
4. Apply knowledge of Greek and Latin roots, prefixes and suffixes to understand content area vocabulary.
5. Understand the meaning of unknown words using derivations, such as word roots and word origins.
